1964 DKW F102 - German Advert
The DKW F102 was Auto-Union's last two-stroke engined car. It was powered by a 1176cc two-stroke, generating 60 horsepower. Lubrication was via the Lubrimat device which injected a predetermined amount of oil into the fuel mix in the carburetor. The Lubrimat had first been used on the DKW F12, but had proven to be problematic, resulting in a spike in seized engines. The incident severely damaged DKW's reputation and turned more customers' away from the company. Auto-Union engineers quickly resolved the issues with the Lubrimat, making it more efficient but sales of the DKW F12 continued to decline.
Auto-Union moved away from small cars with the F102, producing a large, contemporary styled family sedan. Sales picked up again but it was clear that the two-stroke engine era was coming to an end. In 1965 Wheels Australia reviewed the DKW F102. It was a positive review and it was forecast that the new, larger DKW would receive a positive welcome back in Australia. Later the same year the F102 was replaced by the new Audi F103. It would be several more years before Audi's reached Australian shores.
