1963 DKW F12
January 1963 and Auto Union unveils its newest vehicle, the DKW F12. The F12 was an improvement on the DKW Junior. The most notable change was the uplift of the engine from 775cc to 980cc. The car also had a new feature, the Lubrimat oil injection system. Unfortunately for DKW, the Lubrimat was not a successful innovation and in the winter of 1963, many new owners' engines were damaged when the oil in the Lubrimat became too viscous to flow through the injector to the carburettor. Mixing oil directly into the petrol tank was seen as old fashioned and messy, but at least it was fool-proof. The Lubrimat was quickly fixed, but the damage done to DKW's reputation would prove fatal. The days of the two-stroke were numbered.
