1954 Das Magazin Volume Three - This year we drive better!


Das Magazin was an East German cultural and entertainment magazine. In March 1954, East German senior automotive technical engineer, Seigfried Rauch, wrote a brief update on the state of development of East Germany's auto industry. Big news was the 'arrival' of the new IWL Pitty on the market. Unfortunately, this claim was overstated and the Pitty wouldn't actually arrive in stores until 1955. Also news was the planned improvements to the IFA F9 with new variants and better features.

"Each of us has a secret desire to drive to work in our own vehicle, to go on vacation or away for the weekend. If you don't have your own car, this wish can certainly be fulfilled today, and many will have put a small sum aside for it.

But everyone else will also be interested in what our state-owned vehicle industry has to offer this year.

Let's start with the bikes. There will no longer be just one or two standard models but an extensive range that starts with the stable utility bike in nice and cheerful colors and goes far beyond the light, sleek sports machine, equipped with a three-speed gearshift, rim brakes and stem handlebars. In 1954 we will finally be given the motorized bicycle. By the summer a small, light two-stroke engine will be on the market, which is undemanding, cheap and dimensioned in such a way that we don't run the risk of ruining the bike by going too fast.

The motorbikes start with the world-famous and justifiably popular RT 125, the fast and economical small two-stroke machine, which will appear this year in a significantly improved version and on a par with any international competition, as the RT 125/1: with a more powerful engine, improved suspension, swing saddle and drive chain enclosed in a completely dirt-proof cover. Despite its relatively small cylinder capacity, the RT 125/1 is also suitable for a pillion passenger and luggage.

If you drive faster and sportier, if you want to use the motorcycle mainly for two people or even with a sidecar, you will find the right machine in the AWO 250. The 1954 model has a number of improvements that have made this machine, which is also popular abroad, even more powerful, more reliable and more economical. The successful AWO racing machines were the inspiration for these innovations, so that the buyer of the new model is the direct beneficiary of the racing experience.

In the 350cc class, there are two models with fundamentally different engine and chassis designs -the BK 350 from Zschopau with a state-of-the-art two-cylinder two-stroke boxer engine that has been tried and tested in international performance tests, and the R 35, which has continued to be built with its basic features unchanged for years - single-cylinder four-stroke engine, foot-switched four-speed gearbox, a massive sheet steel frame and all-wheel suspension like all GDR models.

Before we move on to the "four-wheeled competition", we still have to talk about the big surprise of 1954: the motor scooter, the motorcycle with the comfort of the car. In an incredibly short development time, the "Pitty", the motor scooter, is in the GDR, which will hopefully go into series production very soon. On this outwardly successful and "inwardly" very confidence-inspiring youngest child of our nationally-owned vehicle industry, you can reach a maximum speed of 70 to 75 km per hour, protected from dirt, and comfortably seated. Fuel consumption is around 3 litres for 100 km.

However, the mirror of the efficiency of an automotive industry, the proof of the skill of technicians and workers, is the car. The F9 is this proof of the automotive industry of the GDR. Its performance, its superior road holding, its elegant form, which was admired again and again, and the numerous harmonious color schemes make many people want to own this car more and more. We know today, this is our car - one day we will drive it too! Because the F9 is being built in ever-increasing numbers, not only as a sedan, but also as an attractive, elegant cabriolet, as a sunroof sedan and as a station wagon, which allows all kinds of transport on weekdays and yet at the weekend is available for the whole family. The F9 will be manufactured with heating this year and radio installation is planned. The engine will be even more powerful, quieter and more economical. Although the F9 is still a desirable item in European and overseas countries, domestic needs will also be met.

Finally, a little consolation for those who have more urgent things to buy in 1954 than a vehicle. We have also thought of them - new, spacious and comfortable type H 6 B high-capacity buses equipped with powerful engines will be used for transport to work as well as for excursions and vacation trips.

1956 IWL Pitty in women's advertising



The IWL Pitty may not have been the most practical personal motor vehicle ever developed but it was very distinctive looking and this made it an instant advertising icon. Both in photographs and in caricature form it began appearing in a variety of advertising across East Germany. This example appears in East Germany's art and culture 'Das Magazine' from September 1956 and is advertising.... feminine hygeine products. For the modern woman.

Krause Invalid Carriages


'At the Leipzig Fair in autumn 1954 we discovered the Krause mobile. Many interested parties crowded around this exhibit and wanted to know a lot about this "tripod". Today we can present this vehicle to you.

The manufacturer, Louis Krause, Leipzig N 22, Elsbethstr. 7 /12 gave us some explanations on this. This three-wheeler was specially developed for the disabled but can also be used as a small car. It offers spacious space for two people and has a luggage compartment separate from the passenger cabin. Particularly wide doors covering the entire cabin, with good seat depth, allow unhindered entry and exit even with stiff legs.

Some important data: Engine: IFA RT 125/1, 125 ccm engine with cooling fan (RT 125-M 1), 5 hp, with 3-speed gearbox, hand kick starter which can be operated comfortably from the driver's seat.
  • Brakes: Amply dimensioned inner shoe brakes with automatic compensation, lockable hand brake.
  • Tyres: 3.50-12, interchangeable wheels and individually spring-loaded.
  • Steering: Rotatable steering column (car-like) with special U-shaped handlebars.
  • Dimensions: length 2400mm, width 1100mm, height 1400mm.
  • Construction: central tube frame, body mostly made of light metal.
  • Controls: clutch and brake pedal combined in such a way that operation is possible individually or simultaneously with just one foot.
  • Twist grip on handlebar. Electric windscreen wipers and signal horn, direction indicators, horn and headlights - dimming can be conveniently operated from the handlebars, electric idle indicator."

Like Fritz Fend, the designer of the Messerschitt KR in West Germany, Louis Krause saw there was a market for motorized invalid carriages for the many disabled veterans of the Second World War. Using the ubiquitous IFA RT125cc motor as its engine, Krause developed a series of vehicles out of various spare motorcycle and bicycle parts. The fully enclosed invalid carriage that appeared on the cover of Der Deutsche Strassen Verkehr in January 1955 did not enter production, but a simplified single seat carriage, the Piccolo-Trumpf did.

The body of the Piccolo-Trumpf comprised the front end of the IWL Pitty scooter, which had been replaced by the more modern IWL Weisel in 1956, Krause was able to secure a stockpile of surplus Pitty front-shields, which were then mounted on a tube frame chassis. A simple, rotatable seat was fitted to the rear of the chassis and the engine was mounted on the left hand side of the carrige. Hand starter and hand controls were fitted to the motorcycle handlebars. As Fend had found, desperation for motorized transport meant that a vehicle designed for invalids also found an able bodied market.

The rather ramshackle and archaic looking Piccolo-Trumpf was replaced in the 1960s by the more modern Simson Duo. As indicated by the name, this vehicle was constructed from Simson motorcycle parts. The driving body comprised two Simson Kr1 or Kr2 moped bodies, joined together with a tube frame chassis. The headlamp/steering column was a standardized component from MZ, which was also used by Simson in its later mopeds. The Duo featured a two-seater bench seat, making it a more effective personal vehicle than the Piccolo-Trumpf.

IWL Pitty Review - Der Deutsche Strassen Verkehr - January 1955


Our first statement about the "Pitty" is already in the headline. We, the editors of your trade journal, drove 3000 km on the "Pitty" scooter. We didn't give this vehicle anything ‘for free’ and treated it in every respect as the regular buyer will do. Yes, we've probably asked a little more of this upholstered traveling chair than you reasonably will. We have not spared ourselves; achoo, achoo! You see, the confirmation is coming, and we believe we can now say something to our readers, the manufacturer, as well as central Automobil-und-Traktorbau authority, from the seat of the "Pitty" and not from the green table.

A motorcycle is a motorcycle and a scooter is a scooter. You should be completely clear about this when evaluating before buying a motorized two-wheeler vehicle. The motorcycle will always remain an extremely sporty vehicle. The scooter is more, shall we say, leisurely. This does not mean, however, that the "Pitty" is a "snail". We have already driven 75 km/h with our ID 05-15 on the autobahn (without a tailwind), and when the traffic light in the city switches from red to green, we go faster than with the EMW. However, before we report more about our experiences with "Pitty", a technical description and the most important technical data. The "Pitty" scooter is a fully faired scooter. The space between the front and rear fairings allows the driver to step through completely freely. The front fairing completely covers the entire fork and the front wheel and thus offers protection against dirt and moisture when driving. The rear fairing encloses the entire engine, i.e., the engine, the chain and the rear wheel. The seat cushion for two people attached to the rear fairing is equipped with Schlaraffia special springs and a cast foam rubber cover. The rear fairing is also the carrier of the spare wheel. In addition, a luggage rack can be attached to the spare wheel. The entire rear hood can be lifted off by opening a latch and loosening a toggle. The seat cushion can be lifted for refueling or to check the spark plug, while the rear hood remains in place. A front floor panel is attached to the front and rear fairing, which has two containers in the front wall, which are designed to accommodate the battery and tools. The dashboard is fitted with the following fittings:
1. Speedometer with odometer,
2. Ignition lock and light switch (combined),
3. Idle indicator,
4. Temperature indicator,
5. Charge control lamp.

Apart from the colored trimmings, the entire paneling has high-gloss chrome-plated trim strips. The headlight built into the front fairing is adjustable. The frame is a torsion-resistant, stable tubular steel frame. It has double welded reinforcements at the main stress points. The main support tube is dimensioned in such a way that it can support heavy loads. The engine and the rear wheel are located on a common power train swing arm, which is mounted below the center of gravity of the engine and supported against the frame by two strong spiral springs. Two oil-pressure shock absorbers serve to dampen the recoil.

The proven IFA single-cylinder two-stroke RT 125-M 1 engine with fan cooling is used as the engine. The power transmission from the engine to the rear wheel is done by a chain drive. The chain is protected against dirt by a rubber sleeve. The rear wheel is equipped with a quick-release axle. The size of the wheels is 3.5 X 12. Elastic full disc drop center rims are used. The wheels are fastened with five cone nuts. The front and rear wheels are interchangeable. The front and rear wheel brakes are large. Both inner shoe brakes have a brake drum diameter of 150 mm. The foot brake (right) acts on the rear wheel, the hand brake on the front wheel. The scooter has a three-speed foot shift operated by the left foot. The front fork is designed as an oscillating fork and, like the powertrain swing arm, has a spring deflection of 70 mm.

Driving Technique

For motorcyclists, driving the "Pitty" means absolutely no change. After 20 to 30 km, you will be on first name terms with the scooter. The excellent suspension makes driving a pleasure, especially on bad roads. The cornering stability is no less than those of the well-known types of motorbikes. The drivers of the IWL even claim that you can put the scooter into the curves in such a way that the running boards rub. Nevertheless, it would not go over. We haven't gone quite as bold yet, but we think it's entirely possible. However, if you don't absolutely have to, you don't have to try it. Of course, when the roads are wet and slippery, caution is advised. But with a motorcycle you are a bit more reserved in such road conditions. As the writer of these lines experienced when I rode it for the first time, when I rode through big puddles in the rain, my legs went up as if pulled by a thread; but then the shower instinctively expected from below didn't come. This was followed by a little soliloquy as we slowed down: "Hammel, you're sitting on a scooter, that kind of thing doesn't happen there." We read various reports in the specialist press about the bad behavior of scooters in strong crosswinds. Such deficiencies have hitherto only occurred to a very small extent. Lateral stability is quite acceptable even in gusty winds. In no case did it happen to us even once that the scooter was carried off track by a sudden attack of cross winds. It goes without saying that the "Pitty" needs to be shifted very diligently, even though the engine works very flexibly, there is only an eighth-litre engine under the rear paneling. After we have carefully broken in our "Pitty", we are delighted with its acceleration and speed.

Road Safety

In terms of road safety, what is of most interest in the current weather is the electrical systems and brakes. Yes, so the light is quite good (the horn too, by the way) when the battery is fully charged. Actually, it should always be, but we had a whole series of difficulties with our ID 05-15. We reported this to the factory and the matter was investigated. It turned out that the control box did not quite meet the requirements that were placed on it by the design of the scooter. Due to a suggestion for improvement by the auto electrician Simon, who works in the scooter production department in the IWL works, the regulator coil and the regulator box have been changed and the error has now been eliminated. Such difficulties will no longer arise in mass production. Colleague Simon received a sizeable bonus for his suggestion for improvement. It really shouldn't have happened that after about 2000 kilometers the earth cable at the connection point came loose. It is the task of the quality control at the works to pay attention to such small things that can grow into great difficulties. The rear lights seem to be too small for us. The illumination of the license plate is sufficient, but as far as the tail light is concerned... a firefly does almost the same thing. We have already reported this defect to the manufacturer. They responded willingly and unbureaucratically to our proposed change. In the future, therefore, the tail lights on the "Pitty" will be considerably larger. Apart from that, it seems right to us and urgently necessary to us - although this is not yet required by the currently valid StVZO - to combine the taillights with a stop light. The costs for this are low; safety, especially in night traffic, is increased. Whether turn signals should be attached to the two-wheeler vehicle is still a matter of debate. If a decision is made to do so, turn signals will also be attached to the "Pitty", which will in any case be state-of-the-art, i.e. turn signals that are automatically switched off after a certain period of time. Based on my own experience, such turn signals are quite useful, especially in city traffic when turning left.

And now to the brakes. The brakes on the motor scooter we drove, which you will be interested to know is from the first hundred series, pulled too hard. We have since established that incorrectly shaped brake cams were installed here. In the new series of scooters that are going on sale these days, that has already been changed, and the foot brake grips like you want a brake to. The front brake has the same dimensions as the rear wheel brake and looks absolutely safe, but the foot brake has a catch, and that is the position of the brake pedal. Here we demand a fundamental change as soon as possible. The foot brake pedal must be placed at least 15 cm forwards in the curve of the front floor panel and lower, so that both feet are in constant contact with the scooter (see foot brake in the car). The way the brake pedal is now, it's not easy to brake safely on a bad road when the scooter is swinging. The arguments that if the brake pedal is further forward you can no longer hang a briefcase in the step-through are unjustified. In any case, road safety is paramount. Well thought-out built-in brakes are part of that.

General but important observations

The engine is an important component of a motor vehicle. Nothing but good things to say about the “Pitty” RT 125-M motor. Fuel consumption is, of course, somewhat higher than with the RT 125/1, since the "Pitty" weighs 45 to 50 kg more than the RT. You must also be aware that although the "Pitty" uses the same motor as the RT 125/1, offering far greater driving comfort, but you don't get this driving comfort for free. The engine is of course constantly more stressed with the "Pitty" than with the RT and thus its service life will probably be somewhat shorter. The engine will be cooled in the production series by a pressure fan. The power transmission to this fan is carried out by a V-belt. We haven't had any problems yet, but it seems appropriate, as is the case with EMW or other cars, for example, to obtain a second V-belt from the factory, measuring 8 X 5 X 475. Once the cooling lamp on the dashboard lights, up the fun is over, but if you have a spare 'V' belt in your tool kit, it will be barely 20 minutes and you're on your way.

It goes without saying that the engine always gets the right lubrication – 25% mineral oil. So, we drive 5 kilometers from the first litre of fuel. Driving with a mixture of 1:20 out of exaggerated caution is not appropriate. Up to about 3000 km you should add ½ liter of oil to 5 litres of petrol. Top lubricating oil is available for 10 Pfennig. It would be a good idea to fit a steering lock as standard on the “Pitty.” We don't even want to think about theft, but the vehicle owner is ultimately obliged to secure his vehicle against misuse.

The dashboard is quite nice, and if you drive a lot, you hardly need to check it anymore. Nevertheless, we think steps should be taken to change this in its design. The speedometer is quite unfavorably placed in the current series and is almost completely covered by the handlebars, especially in the lower speed ranges. We found the idle indicator (green on the inside) and the temperature indicator (green on the outside) to light up when the fan stopped working, as quite beneficial.

Having ridden various West German scooters, we did not consider the “Pitty” to be defective in any feature. What should still be provided on the dashboard is an opening for a central plug on the outside left next to the charge indicator light. IKA should develop a small hand lamp as soon as possible that can then be offered as an accessory for the “Pitty.” Spark plugs could then be changed in the dark as you need. Replacing the V-belt of the fan drive or even a wheel in the dark is a special test task for an ambitious car mechanic.

All "Pittys" will get an ugly eyesore after a while - that's on the back left, where the kickstarter is kicked down in a quadrant. Despite all care, it's unavoidable that you occasionally slide the sole of your shoe along the paintwork. The manufacturer should consider attaching suitable protection at this point.

A well-known, but always accepted evil of the two-stroke engine is its loud engine and intake noise. The "Pitty" is no exception. Modifications to the exhaust have resulted in a reduction in overall volume enough that is within the permissible number of decibels allowed by the StVZO. This means that "Pitty" with its working noises is of course within the limits of what is officially permitted, but that shouldn't stop the technicians and engineers from continuing to work on reducing the noises.

There is nothing to say about caring for the “Pitty’s” tyres other than for caring for tyres in general. Here too, compliance with certain tyre pressures is particularly important. In solo operation the front tyre should be 1.2 - 1.3 atm, rear 1.8 atm. With passenger use, the front should be 1.2-1.3 atm, rear 2 atm.

Accessories are also included.

The scooter is generally viewed by, say, unsportsmanlike riders as an advance over the motorcycle. We can only underline this statement. However, despite all the protection that the scooter offers through its construction, it does not come without the need of a few accessories. In our opinion, the most important thing you need for a scooter is a handlebar-mounted windshield. Our previous attempts to get such a thing failed. We were about to make a fuss when we found out that IWL doesn’t have one. That's the way it is. However, Industriewerke Ludwigsfelde are actually preparing for the production of windshields. According to the information we have received, delivery should begin in February. However, as long as you don't have a windshield, you have to wear goggles, especially when driving for long periods in the cold. What one experiences when looking to buy reasonably decent goggles could form an essay in itself. We want to leave it at that with the statement that the DHZ Fein mechanics/optics still has a lot to do in order to bring really good motorcycle goggles onto the market. The fact that there are motorcyclists and scooter riders who wear glasses seems to be completely unknown in production circles. At least full-vision goggles and special rain goggles, which can also be used by eyeglass wearers, are missing.

The same applies to rear-view mirrors. There is nothing here that could even meet normal requirements. Hopefully this situation will change soon. Luggage racks, which are also an indispensable accessory for scooters, are manufactured in Ludwigsfelde and are available with the scooter at the same time.

As far as the other protective clothing is concerned, a good Klepper-type rubber raincoat (available in the HO for about 60 DM) has proven to be quite sufficient on the motor scooter. Leg warmers made of rubber or similar are not necessary. The only thing that can really be said about the glove chapter is that if you save there, you save in the wrong place. If you suddenly had to reach for the clutch with stiff hands and your fingers couldn't get up because they were too clammy, then you will learn to appreciate good motorcycle gloves or protective hand caps attached to the handlebars.

The last thing left is the helmet. Do it how you want. In any case, we wear a sports helmet with leather flaps. It not only protects the head in the event of a fall, but also the neck and ears from annoying drafts. It is not a statement to put on such a helmet. It actually protects. We could try it. And you have the willpower to cope with the smiles of people walking or driving you.

We have now told you a great deal about the "Pitty" and the rest of the trimmings. We have not gone into the circumstances of why it took so long for the appearance of this first motor scooter of our nationally-owned industry. We believe and hope that we were able to convince ourselves that the industrial plant in Ludwigsfelde carried out a very long and thorough series of tests in order to be able to sell the scooter in really good quality.

So let's hope that you too will be able to buy your long-awaited "Pitty" motor scooter this year and that you too will join the crowd and have a lot of fun with the motor scooter.

1954 Illustrierter Motorsport (GDR) Year 4 Volume 1

























Even as the ruins of Germany were still smoking, home mechanics and sportsmen began tinkering with machines and competing in local motor sports. Sporting organisations were reformed and events recommenced. The Authorities in all the Occupation Zones regarded much of this activity as a waste of resources, but it kept people happy through these dark times and, as time went on, there was good prize money to be made. For the motoring industry, whether in the west or east, it was a good opportunity to showcase, test and improve their postwar products. It said "we are back!"

Illustrierter Motorsport was founded in the Soviet Occupation Zone in 1950, reporting on local and international motorsports. As 1954 started and East Germany changed course from hard-line Soviet-style industrialisation towards a consumer economy (see editorial below), Illustrierter Motorsport reflected the new, hopeful vision in its 1 January 1954 cover. The new East German motorscooter, the "Pitty" took pride of place on the front cover. It promised citizens cheap, effective and comfortable personal transport affordable to everyone. Unfortunately, behind the scenes the manufacturer, VEB Industrialwerkes of Ludwigsfelde (IWL), were struggling to address the new machine's many technical challenges. IWL had never built any kind of motor vehicle before, which was a problem in itself. Specialist parts, such as carburetors, brakes, suspension and even wheel rims, had to be manufactured by local workshops who also had little experience with these components. Parts failure was commonplace, consequently, the writers from Illustrierter Motorsport were denied the opportunity to take the machine for a test ride and technical review until March 1954. Even then the Pitty would not be available for sale until Christmas later that year.

The IWL Pitty through the pages of the Illustrierter Motorsport 1954


Under public pressure to meet the demands for cheap personal transport, the VEB Automobile Directorate finally approved a motorscooter project in late 1953. After 81 days design and development, the team under Roland Berger at the Industrialwerke Ludwigsfelde had assembled three prototype vehicles for presentation and testing. The cover of the first edition of Illustrierter Motorsport for 1954 showcased the original prototype on its cover. A glimpse of what is to come for the transport hungry people of East Germany

Letters flutter onto our editorial desk every day, in which our readers want to know whether the first motor scooter will be on the market this year, what it will look like, what it can do, what it costs, etc. Well, most of these questions my colleague Rosenhammer and the undersigned can answer on these pages. If no unforeseen difficulties arise, the first "Pittys" will be rolling on the streets of our beautiful homeland with their happy companions this summer [July 1954]. For those who want to know exactly, the top speed of the vehicle will be around 75 km/h, the cruising speed is said to be around 60 km/h. The number of scooter owners will increase from month to month and by the end of the year we will have several thousand scooter friends who have a "Pitty" to call her own.

We can't give any binding information about the price at the moment, but it is certain that the sales price of 950 to 1000 DM that went through the press a few months ago will be significantly higher. The aforementioned price was intended for the "Hexe". This was a motor scooter that was built with painstaking, private craftsmanship, but which would never have met the demands of our working people. As I said, the price for "Pitty" has not yet been fixed, but we recommend that anyone who wants to purchase this real gem they if they do not have 1000 DM together idle their hands, but should diligently continue to save.

A few more details that should be of interest: fuel consumption is 2.5 to 3 liters per 100 km. Wheelbase is 1390 mm, weight 120 kg. When we talk about our first motor scooter, we don't want to forget the people who work tirelessly day and night to implement our government's new course so that our workers in town and country can have a vehicle available as quickly as possible which you have been longing for a long time. The Ludwigsfeld collective, under the direction of its chief designer Roland Berger, has really achieved amazing things in the last few months! After the completion of the first test scooter on December 21st, which we illustrated in our first January issue, practically the new scooter was manufactured in the period from January 6th to February 15th. This is an act to be proud of.

Tests are currently being carried out with these three vehicles. It won't be long before the zero series will be launched. These vehicles will also put through their paces again. Our editors were promised they would provide us with a scooter from this series for a test report. We hope, dear readers, to be able to provide you with this report by May at the latest.

Well, until the time has come, the savings must be built up. But those who haven't saved enough "on the high edge" by then may have become lucky winners by the summer and can also afford a "Pitty".

However, we have to dribble a small drop of bitterness into the cup of joy. All friends of a small car, who also longingly hope that a corresponding four-wheeled vehicle will soon be available for sale in the HO sales outlets, we unfortunately have to disappoint at the moment. Such a project does exist, however, the previous publications about it, regrettable as it is, are more about dreams of the future than realities. But you may be convinced, dear readers, that the leading men in the ministries and in the design offices are very seriously working on such a car and that the time is probably not far off when we will be able to publish an equally gratifying report as is the case this time about "Pitty" about the first small car in our German Democratic Republic.

So we'll be in touch ‘on the same matter’, dear friends, when we can serve you our "Pitty Test" as a tasty springtime treat.

We ride the Pitty

My report, which was intended to be purely technical, must begin with a confession. Like so many others, when the first Italian motor scooters appeared, I too was one of those who claimed that such a vehicle was a fashion gimmick and would not assert itself. Reality or facts have convinced me that it isn't so, and so today I, as well as my wife - and not forgetting my daughter - am absolutely infatuated with this lively lovable little purr.

And why? Well, to put it bluntly, as a motorcyclist you're always a little pig. In short, even on short trips you are forced to put on at least an over-suit in order not to get soiled, not to mention when it is slushy or raining. We didn't even think of the lovely ladies, for whom the motorcycle is out of the question due to the aforementioned difficulties, especially as a self-driver. To cut a long story short: the motor scooter has established itself in multiple versions, and it is no longer surprising today if a nurse in her nurse's uniform or a midwife with her utensil case, just like the doctor with the instrument bag or the master plumber with his tools come whizzing by on a scooter. However, let's not lose ourselves, but come back to the main topic. When the first announcements and even photos of a scooter appeared in the sports and trade press, which had been manufactured as a prototype in a state-owned factory and which was supposedly being tested, there was only one opinion - That's right, this is a people's vehicle we have been missing for a long time. As the official motorsports journal, however, we were not as hasty as some of our colleagues in the press, because we know that nothing can be stamped out of the ground and that there is still a long way to go from the prototype to the series-ready model. When all is said and done, in order to track down the great rumors floating around, we decided to get to the bottom of the Pitty affair. Despite the icy whistling wind and the slippery road, we made our way to the state-owned company in Ludwigsfelde, and so we came to the right place. In the head of the testing department, we met an old acquaintance who was well known from the Junkers factory in Dessau as the "teacher" Berger to try it for ourselves.

The exterior: shapeliness combined with practicality. It is worth mentioning that all three Pittys presented to us have different color combinations. It's a pity that we can't produce color photos in our magazine. There were soothingly tasteful color combinations, some of which were missing on our motorcycles. The polished aluminum trim strips also make the scooter a real gem on the outside. However, we didn't want to be blinded and sniffed the insides closely. With the loosening of three knurling nuts, the rear fairing with the seat for the driver and passenger and spare wheel was easily removed, and the heart of the Pitty lay clearly in front of us. First of all, we welcomed an acquaintance that has been tried and tested thousands of times: the good old IFA RT 125 cc engine transmission block from Zschopau, albeit in a slightly modified form. The robust, reliable little machine is equipped with a cooling air suction fan, the turbine impeller of which is driven directly off the front of the crankshaft by means of a small V-belt. For this reason, an opening covered by a grate is harmoniously designed into the rear wheel cover for the cooling air inlet. A few minor but necessary changes to the kickstarter are not worth mentioning.

The HP number is known: 5.2 HP at around 5000 rpm, compression ratio 6.5:1. With a bore of 52 mm and a stroke of 58 mm, this results in a total stroke of 123 ccm. Mixture lubrication is 1:25; battery ignition; alternator 6 volt, 35/45 watt (exciting), multi-disc wet clutch. Power transmission from the engine to the gearbox by an endless sleeve chain, three-speed foot-operated gearbox, reduction of the engine to the gearbox 1:2.75. Gear ratio: 1st gear 1:23; 2nd gear 1:11.7; 3rd gear 1:7.85. Well, that was practically nothing new. But now it's coming:- the engine-transmission block is installed in the rear-wheel tuning fork so that it resonates! This has the disadvantage that a long petrol hose has to go along with all the swinging movements, and the advantage that the chain from the engine to the rear wheel runs constantly and can work well disguised without great stress.

The team of engineers and technicians solved the suspension of the rear wheel swinging fork in a very simple and practical way by using an unguided screw-in compression spring, which, contrary to expectations, without a shock absorber - describing a small arc of a circle - has proven itself with the best suspension properties, as one takes into account the greatest value on the simplest construction of wear resistance. It is logical that the rear wheel also has a wide fender under the hood, so that the drive unit is protected from dirt. In the event of punctures, only the quick-release axle has to be removed and the hinged mudguard folded up by loosening two screws, the brake drum and chain on the sprocket remain unadjusted and do not require any additional assembly. The fuel tank is mounted above the engine. Of course, to fill it up, all you have to do is fold up the seat, which is also hinged, and it's no problem to top up the tank quickly and without getting dirty.

And now to the front. A tried-and-tested approach was taken in the front fork and suspension construction with a rocker arm coil spring arrangement similar to that used successfully by the Italian Moto Guzzi and the West German "Adler". It is also not very difficult at the front to change disc wheels in the event of a puncture.

Actually, that would be practically everything for the professional, but still a little more detail: - Large, wide brakes at the front and rear are actuated with a cable pull or linkage. The rims, fitted with 3.5 x 12-inch tires, are divided in the middle and held together by six steel screws, of course with a snug fit, so that even tire mounting should be quite easy even for laypeople. Regarding the tire itself, it should be said that the chosen dimensions are the more correct ones based on general experience in scooter construction as a middle between motorcycle size and otherwise generally usual scooter size.

The controls: with a double lever - equally good for soles and heels - the foot shift lever on the left and the foot brake on the right. On the handlebars, as usual, the clutch lever on the left, the front wheel brake lever on the right, the twist grip and the dimming switch with horn button on the left. Below that, embedded in a dashboard, is the clearly arranged speedometer, next to it the idle indicator lamp and high beam indicator lamp, the ignition light switch, and on top of that there's still room for a clock. Needless to say that the seat, which can be opened, is also a tool holder. It is very softly cushioned and comfortable. It remains to be mentioned that when opened, it not only reveals the tank filler neck, but also an opening for sparkplug access and change. The spare wheel is screwed to the rear of the fairing with three screws. You can also attach a luggage rack to it. An additional, purposeful plexiglass windshield construction proved to be very practical, which is intended to protect promotional drivers and the older generation. One more thing: The running boards are lined with grooved non-slip rubber, while the edges are edged with aluminum ribbed strips. So, that's it.

The test drive was very satisfactory. The driving characteristics are good, also in curves and when braking. One finds the good protection of the lower body to be particularly pleasant compared to the motorcycle, although one has to get used to the fact that the knee[pad]s, as are usual with motorcycles, are missing.

It is already certain that the motor scooter will also find its way into the German Democratic Republic. But please don't let me give you the idea of thinking: 'Well, based on the report everything is clear now, all you have to do is go to an HO special sales point and bring the little dollops to lay down on the table and roar into spring.’ Far from it. The technicians will understand that better. Of course, the machine is up and running, but now it first has to mature with test drives over hill and dale for many hours on the autobahn.

On the whole the little contraption is fine, but there's still a lot to polish that the design collective will figure out on their own. Let's spare ourselves any hints at this point about small errors, which can, however, be remedied with simple means. I hope and wish that when you are the happy owner of a Pitty later on, you will confirm to me as a happy owner: "The thing is a stunner!"

Both Rosenhammer and Grassmann carefully temper customer expectations - the Pitty still has a long way to go in development before it will be available in the stores, but the public is too keen. They do not want to wait! This will become a problem.

After months of 'quiet', by July 1954 the Pitty had still not hit the stores. In edittion 22, the editors took aim at the ministry and management at Ludwigsfelde.

Problem child "PITTY"

In the spring of this year an article appeared in our "Illustrated Motorsport" magazine about the "Pitty" motor scooter that was to be expected. The working people of our republic have been waiting longingly for this new vehicle for almost a year now. It was clear that the test-driven prototype would have to mature in terms of design and prove its reliability in lengthy trials. Plans were drawn up and gave hope that the pretty motor scooters would soon be released from the VEB Ludwigsfelde plant. In the meantime, however, more than half a year has passed.

Well, in Berlin and the surrounding area you can see one of these charming little purrs from time to time. However, up to now they have only been test vehicles. In vain, however, the huge crowd of interested parties have been waiting, after many announcements and just as much reassurance, for the scooter to be offered in the HO stores.

The latest information we have received says that around 1000 scooters are expected to hit the market before the end of this year, in the Christmas month. However, this ray of hope should not hide the fact that the state-owned company in Ludwigsfelde has so far worked extremely carelessly and without initiative. We therefore considered it the duty of our editors, especially since we receive a spate of letters to the editor asking us to "shed light" on the whole matter. Today we can make the gratifying statement that the main administration for car and tractor construction of the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering, which at times dealt with the "Pitty" case with great lethargy, is working hard and trying with all the means at its disposal to meet the demand for our working people, namely, to bring out a people's vehicle of this type [i.e., a scooter]. Now the time has finally come for series production to start!

There are many reasons why it took so long before the "Pitty" ship was able to get afloat. It goes without saying that the slow-witted people have been held accountable in the meantime. Small technical difficulties, which among other things were perhaps due to the fact that the RT125 IFA motor under the fairing of the scooter was no longer wind-cooled, but had been given fan cooling and others small technical things should not have been a reason and above all is no excuse from those responsible for disappointing our workers for so long.

For the future, we recommend not to advertise anything before it is ready. Don't raise hopes if you can't realize them quickly enough. Basically, we would like to state that this time it was least of all due to the material difficulties, which are often used as an excuse, but to numerous design flaws that had to be ironed out in testing. The fact that these weaknesses appeared in the Ludwigsfelde industrial plant cannot be concealed. A collective of engineers there, with great initiative, succeeded in "getting a scooter up and running". The design results weren't bad at all, but you couldn't expect these designers, who come from a different field, to develop a mature motor vehicle right away. Therefore, experienced designers from the state-owned vehicle industry should have been brought in earlier, who could have solved these problems more quickly on the basis of their knowledge. Admittedly, this has now happened in the last stage of development, but why did so much have to be done beforehand? We already mentioned at the beginning of our article that we intervened with a heavy hand.

In the interest of our working population, we demand that a case of "Pitty" must not be repeated! Let's hope that the delivery of the first motor scooter in the German Democratic Republic, which will start in December, will give the happy owners a lot of joy and that we will get over the long wait time for a motorized people's vehicle.
