1935 Neue Frau Summer Issue 3

Hello DKW friends,

Now we start with the in-house communications from AUTO-UNION before 1945.

Since time immemorial, technical understanding has been given to the man, while the woman takes care of the household and the upbringing of the children. As a result, the man was responsible when a vehicle was purchased; the man determined the make, type, colour and equipment.

In the mid-thirties, AUTO UNION recognized a potential that should not be underestimated: the woman and the car; the woman and the motorcycle. In 1934 “Die Neue Frau” (the new woman), an illustrated magazine for today's women who are naturally enthusiastic about AUTO UNION products was first published, covering Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer automobiles, seen through the eyes of women, as well as women’s fashion and interests. You can even read testimonials from women owners of DKW motorcycles. The majority of all photos come from Elisabeth Boerner, probably the wife of Curt Boerner (Berlin, BDG) who was responsible for the overall design. Curt Boerner was a member of the Association of German Commercial Graphics (BDG, founded in 1919, from 1948: Association of German Graphic Designers).

The magazine went through several changes of name, up to issue 7, it was “The New Woman.” Issue 8 was “with the four rings of AUTO UNION.” From Issue 9 it was “The four rings and the new woman.” In 1938, Issue 13, the magazine was given a new name again: “The Four Rings.”

I can only start with issue 3, unfortunately I don't (yet) have issues 1 and 2.
