1957 FSO Syrena - A Polish variation of IFA

DKW F7s and F8s were popular sellers in the prewar years across central Europe and were seen by many manufacturers as a good template for a budget car. The Polish FSO company took many lessons from the DKW and IFA F8, including the design of its chassis and the use of two-stroke twin motor. The engine was 746cc, which suggests it more likely a copy of the Jawa derivative than an IFA copy. Early cars were wooden framed with Dynaplast bodywork, but evolved to be steel framed. In 1966, the Syrena was upgraded with an IFA Wartburg 900cc two-stroke triple. More than half a million Syrenas were built until the vehicle was retired in 1983. They are rarely seen outside Poland and former Communist bloc countries.
