1955 Sachsenring P240 Review - Der Deutsche Strassen Verkehr - March 1955

One of the main attractions at the 1956 Leipzig Spring Fair will be the new Type 240 "Sachsenring" passenger car from VEB Horch, Zwickau.

Horch - a name that has a good reputation on the international car market. Horch - known throughout the world for the H3A and H6 trucks built after 1945, is now continuing the tradition of the factory and is showing its first passenger car, the 240 "Sachsenring" developed after 1945, at the trade fair Anyone who sees this car will say: "A good, successful start for Horch-Werke."

In the international automotive world, the name "Sachsenring" is a firm acknowledgment of peaceful and sportingly fair conflicts between man and material. Just like the athletes at the Sachsenring, exhibitors and buyers from many countries are now shaking hands in Leipzig for the exchange of goods and peaceful coexistence.

We wish exhibitors, buyers and visitors every success in Leipzig.

Type 240 "Sachsenring" is the name of the new six-seat limousine with a modern all-steel pontoon body, which VEB Horch, Zwickau, is adding to the car market.

It is not surprising when the VEB Horch moves into the public eye, of general interest, with this new type. After all, the people at this plant have constantly proven over the past few years that experience that has been gathered over the years and paired with the latest knowledge in motor vehicle construction forms the basis for the production of new, elegant and powerful motor vehicles. This is also shown by the new Type 240 "Sachsenring", whose four-door body is bolted to the frame via intermediate rubber links. The frame is very torsion-resistant because the box-shaped longitudinal and cross members are electrically welded together. The vehicle, including the spare wheel, has five super-balloon tyres 7.10-15 on drop centre rims 5k x 15. The front wheels have independent wheel suspension and swing on wishbones. For the front and rear suspension, four torsion bars were installed in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, which are adjustable at the front and rear on the frame. To avoid road bumps To mitigate the shocks caused, telescopic shock absorbers are arranged at the front and rear on both sides of the frame.

The car is steered via the steering wheel, steering spindle, rubber washer, steering worm and finger lever shaft with rolling tooth via the divided tie rod on the steering lever and front wheels.

The rear axle is manufactured as a rigid axle, the thrust, braking and lateral forces are transmitted to the frame via a support triangle and rocker arm. The rear axle shafts and thus the rear wheels are driven by a pair of hypoid bevel gears and a differential. An oil pressure brake that acts simultaneously on all four wheels was installed as a foot brake, while the hand brake is mechanically actuated and acts on the brake shaft via a Bowden cable and from here on the rear wheel brakes via a cable pull.

The water-cooled one. Four-stroke petrol engine is mounted four times in rubber on the frame. It has six cylinders in a row with a total displacement of 2.4 litres and delivers 80 hp at a speed of 4250 rpm. The engine is connected to the gearbox via a hydraulically actuated single-plate dry clutch. The housing for the clutch and the gearbox is cast in one piece and flanged to the engine. The second to fourth gears of the change-speed gearbox are positively synchronized, the gear wheels of all forward gears have helical teeth and are in constant mesh with one another.

The electrical system is powered by a 12V/84Ah battery fitted in front of the body panel on the right-hand side of the engine compartment and powered by a voltage-regulating 12V/200W alternator. The battery ignition system is suppressed for radio and VHF reception in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry for Post and Telecommunications. The front and rear seats are made as one-piece bench seats, with the backrest of the front bench seat being able to be pivoted backwards horizontally, so that together with the raised rear bench seat, a sleeping facility is created. The front bench seat can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction, and the inclination of the backrest can be adjusted using a twist grip on the driver's side of the bench seat. Other special features are the curved front windscreen without a centre bar, the hinged windows in the front doors that can be opened by means of telescopic hinges, the heating and ventilation system, the built-in push-button radio with loudspeaker and the illuminated engine and trunk. The bonnet and boot lid are locked and opened from inside the car. The spare wheel, secured by a twist grip, is located vertically on the left-hand side in a recess in the trunk. In addition, boxes are installed on the left and right of the luggage compartment, in which snow chains, spare parts boxes and other accessories can be accommodated. The jack is behind the spare wheel, and the fire extinguisher is located at the bottom left next to the driver's seat. All the control instruments important for operating the vehicle are clearly arranged on the dashboard. In a shapely combination device are speedometer, oil pressure gauge; Coolant thermometer, fuel gauge, ammeter, high beam and indicator light control - cleaned. In addition, the timer, which can be folded out for winding, is located in the middle of the dashboard and the glove compartment is on the right-hand side, covered by a cover.

In the middle of the lower part of the dashboard there are four buttons on the left and right next to the radio, which have the following tasks from left to right: switch for side lights, high beam, fog lights, interior lighting, light and dark Switching of the instrument lighting, windscreen wipers, heating fan and cigar lighter.

The ignition lock and the charging indicator light on the left below the keyboard are illuminated when the doors are opened. The starter cable is attached to the right of the ignition lock, and there is a socket for the hand lamp on the far right under the dashboard. The anti-glare rear-view mirror has a built-in reading light and can be tilted from its normal position using a small lever, allowing the reflection to be seen clearly without glare.

The vehicle reaches a top speed of 140 km/h, at which the road holding of the vehicle can be regarded as absolutely flawless. Depending on the driving style, the fuel consumption is 11 to 13 litres, the lubricant consumption is 0.1 litres per 100 km, the maximum torque is 17.0 kgm at n = 4250 rpm. With the constant further development of motor vehicle construction, however, people's demands are increasing and they are no longer satisfied with partial modernization. It is therefore necessary to replace outdated units with more modern ones in order to meet the demands of the 25th Plenum of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, namely: “modernize, mechanize, automate."

In order to meet these demands, the VEB Horch must, for example, develop an automatic transmission, similar to that of the Soviet "Volga" car, in addition to other improvements, since the installation of an automatic transmission makes a motor vehicle significantly simpler and lighter to operate, i.e., to switch gears. The fulfillment of this requirement would also correspond to the development of international motor vehicle construction. It also seems necessary to keep up with the development of the international motor vehicle industry and other types of vehicles such as station wagons, convertible limousines and convertibles of the type 240 to build "Sachsenring" in order to have a more versatile offer for export.

For a better overview, niche data are compiled below:

The 240 "Sachsenring" type is a product of our state-owned motor vehicle industry, which will also meet the requirements of the most demanding user. We wish you a "bon voyage".
